Moonlighting Policy:

 

DMC/Sinai-Grace Hospital does not require moonlighting, however if a resident would like to moonlight they must meet the below requirements:

 

1.       Because trainee education is a full-time endeavor, the program director must ensure that moonlighting does not interfere with the ability of the trainee to achieve the goals and objectives of the educational program.

 

2.       The program director must comply with the DMC written policy regarding moonlighting.

 

3.       The resident must receive prior written approval from the Program Director and the Chief of the Department or Section. The Program Director and/or the Chief of the Department or Section may withhold or withdraw his or her consent at any time, as he or she, in his or her sole discretion, deems appropriate.

 

4.       Moonlighting that occurs within a DMC health care facility (internal moonlighting), must be counted toward the 80-hour weekly limit on duty hours.

 

DMC Training Program (Internal Medicine) has a written policy regarding moonlighting that:

 

Ø     Only PGY-2 and PGY-3 in good standing, academically and professionally are eligible to moonlight

 

Ø     Resident moonlighting activities is prohibited during rotations on the medicine inpatient wards, ICU, CCU, Emergency Room or other rotation months with night call

 

Ø     Total number of hours worked, including moonlighting can’t exceed 8o-hours per week

 

Ø     Residents may not moonlight while on call.  If done, this will result in immediate suspension of moonlighting privileges and possible initiation of corrective action.

 

Ø     Moonlighting may not be allowed to negatively impact on the resident’s education or performance.

 

Ø     All moonlighters must abide by the Moonlighting Policies at each of the various DMC hospitals.

 

Ø     Residents with J-1 are not allowed to moonlight

 

Ø     Residents are allowed to moonlight only within DMC Hospitals

 

Ø     If a resident doesn’t comply with the requirements, he/she will not be allowed to moonlight in the future

 

 

Request for moonlighting privileges must be made to the Program Director.  Approval for moonlighting privileges will be based on the following criteria:

·        Overall satisfactory performance in the residency program

·        Skill logs – must have completed the following minimum number of supervised procedures:

-   Abdominal Paracentesis                                     3

-   Arterial puncture  (ABG)                                    3

-   Arthrocentesis-Knee                                           3

-   Central venous line placement                            3

-   Lumbar puncture                                               3

-   NG tube placement                                            3

-   Pap smear and endocervical cultures                  3

-   Thoracentesis                                                    3

-   ACLS                                  Certification must be current

 

·        Moonlighting privileges must be approved by the Clinical Competency Committee and the Program Director.

 

Resident not meeting minimum requirements will be denied moonlighting approval and will be notified in writing.

 

 

 

 

In summary;

· The resident may not work longer than a 30 hr shift at one time.

· There must be 10 hours between shifts,

· The Resident can not work more than an 80 work week including the time spent moonlighting.

· The resident must have one continuous 24 hour shift off per week.

· There will be no moonlighting Monday- Thursday unless the resident is on paid vacation time.
