NEONATOLOGY

Objectives:

  1. To enable the transitional intern to assess, evaluate and become familiar with the features of a normal full term infant and the common problems that may arise thereafter in the infants during the first few days after birth.
  2. To offer opportunity for the intern to work in newborn ICU and become familiar with the common problems and management of the sick high risk infant. The elective shall provide an opportunity for the intern to be exposed to common newborn conditions like prematurity, hyaline membrane disease, problems in infant nutrition, infant of diabetic mothers, infant of drug dependent mothers, ventilation care, etc.
  3. To provide the intern with adequate opportunity to assist in the resuscitation of infants in the delivery room and in the immediate recognition and management of potential problems in the newborn. It shall also provide an opportunity for experience in the triaging of newly born infants to the different levels of neonatal care available.

Methods:

  1. The intern shall spend one month in his rotation in the NICU.
  2. The intern shall perform physical examinations of the infant, assess problems that may be present and communicate appropriately with the mother. The intern shall be directly supervised by the neonatologist attending.
  3. The intern shall be assigned sick patients in conjoint care with the residents or nurse practitioner. The intern shall work as a part of the team consisting of the pediatric residents, nurse practitioner, social service worker, neonatology fellow and attending neonatologist. The student shall manage and directly care for the cases assigned to him. Thus, he will be responsible for the general work-up, follow-up and treatment of his patients under supervision from his resident, fellow and attending neonatologist.
  4. The intern shall take call every 4th night or as arrange with Dr. Womack.  The intern’s  responsibility is to work with his team in the are of infants and shall respond to the calls in the nurseries, including NICU, and the delivery room. In the latter, exposure of the intern to delivery room experience, including resuscitation, will be maximal.
  5. The intern shall attend all neonatal conferences and teaching rounds scheduled for the month. He/she may be assigned to present a case or topic during conferences.
